I am pleased to report that Flat Stanley arrived safe and sound in Helsinki on February 14. Valentine's Day! When I opened the envelope, he told me it had been a fairly easy trip to Finland. It took 9 days, not too bad considering how far he had to go.

When Flat Stanley arrived, I was in Barcelona, Spain, so he was waiting for me to come home. Since then, Stanley has come with me to work every day. My team has given him a desk near our coffee machine. Stanley has become quite a chatterbox and has become very popular with the girls. I think they like his brown hair and his big smile.

Last week, Stanley came with me on a few business trips. First, we went to Copenhagen, Denmark. While I was in meetings all day, Stanley did a tour of the city… and even saw the famous mermaid! We were in Copenhagen only for one night, but we will go back there later this month.

Next, Stanley came with me and my team to Rovaniemi, in Northern Finland. In fact, Rovaniemi is the actual home of Santa Claus, as it sits right on the Arctic Circle. In Rovaniemi, Stanley came with us wherever we went -- on a snowmobile tour through the tundra, to the "smoke sauna" where after we get really hot we jumped into the frozen lake (Stanley watched because we forgot his swimsuit!!), and Stanley even came "snowcarting" (go-carts, but on snow.) with us. Last week, Stanley is came with me to New York. We had to get a special "visa" for Stanley to enter the United States, but he had a great time. While I was in meeting all day, Stanley did a tour of the Manhattan... walks in Central Park, shopping in SoHo, even a trip up the Empire State Building. We went to the "Top of the Rock" (top of the Rockefeller Center) together and took a few pictures.

Now, Stanley is back in Helsinki. His schedule is a bit messed up due to the jet lag, but he'll be OK. We are off to Copenhagen on Thursday, then at the end of the month, we are going on another extended trip -- to China!

I know, I know... "doors as objects of art"? But I'm serious. My fascination began during a visit to Tunisia. I had the opportunity to visit Sidi Bou Said, a picturesque blue and white village overlooking the Bay of Tunis. What caught my attention more than the scenery and the carpet and sounvenir shops was the doors. They were like works of art 'framed' by archways or door frames, accented by door knobs, rivets, paint. Doors have an air of mystery to them. What or who lives behind them?
